My first memory was of a slap, hard across the face: the sting on my cheek and the jarring of my bones as I slammed back into my bed. It was my dad who had hit me.

I had been four.

Most of my memories were much of the same and no one ever saw, no one ever fought to help, no one ever cared.

Then we moved.

My new neighbor cared, rescued the twelve-year-old I had been from a beating. Always thought I’d suffer the nightmare alone, I was wrong.

Mace Donati saved me that day in all the ways a person could be saved.

And his daughter, Mia, she became the friend I had always wanted, my conscience when my own faltered, the light that led me home when I had lost my way.

The girl who grew into the only woman I would ever love.

But when you realize you’re more like your father than the good people who took you in and gave you a home, the only way to return their kindness is to let them go.

I let them go, got so far lost in the shadows I couldn’t remember who I was anymore. Mia never gave up on me. She fought for me, kept the light on so I’d find my way back.

And when I did, life threw us a curveball. I had to hurt Mia in order to save her.

But when my past comes back to haunt me and I almost lose her, I’m ready to fight for her…fight to find a way back into her heart while keeping the demons from my past from finishing what they started.

This story was about a damaged boy who grew to become a darkened man.
He felt worthy of nothing, made to be nothing but a burden.
He had to scrape by to survive the abuse that his father gave him.
He was responsible for every aspect of his life and surroundings since he could remember.
This he is Cole Campbell.

This story is about a girl with so much light as a child that grew into a beacon as a woman.
She has self-worth, made to be
She had most anything that she wanted and not worries about how she was going to survive.
She had support from her father and aunt to make a loving family.
This she is Mia Donati.

We are taken on a journey of a lost soul and how one accepting family that brought him some light in his life.

”Don’t let the unfortunate circumstances of your childhood dictate the rest of your life. Reach for the star, Cole, I’ll help you.”

The love that has grown between these two was most certainly a journey. From day one they felt a pull to each other. Cole never wanted to cross a line with Mia and betray the kindness of Mace, Mia’s father. They gave him a home, something that he never truly had. As the time past Cole made decisions to keep Mia safe and some of the adventures included Mace.

I was shouting at my Kindle for these two to just admit their feelings to each other and be together! It was infuriating at times but it fit for the story and how Cole wanted to do one good thing in his life. But that one good thing was Mia. When we read each side to to their love of the other, it was so clear but circumstances always seemed to get in the way.

“What I feel for you goes way beyond love”

There were some shady dealings going on and Mace ended up in the middle of it along with Cole. Who could they trust? What was the truth? The want and need to find out. There common ground for this comes in the form of Mia and their community. To keep them safe was key. As the story goes on we see what is going on and there were some twists, turns and jaw dropping moments.

I was happy with the outcome of their journey, they faced so much and found a way to be as one.

If you love coming of love, angst, drama, suspense and light in darkness then this is for you!
